Introduction

I am not sure if OpenStreetMap is a hobby or a lifestyle. From Wikipedia:

The OpenStreetMap project was created as a collabarive project to create a free editable map of the world.

With this in mind OSM is a great project that lets people like me and you edit, add and contribute to a map that is created by other equals. The maps are at least for Norway as good as Garmins own maps. There are flaws in both of them but only OSM maps are easy to fix yourself. After doing this a few times it is hard to go back to the commercial outdated maps.

Existing maps

Here is a list of maps you can use for your favourite Garmin GPS.
* Frikart provides maps for Norway and most of Europe.

Create your own maps

There is plenty of documentation on how to make your own maps using data from OpenStreetMap. Read here on how to create maps for Garmin devices and here on how to create maps using your own webserver.
